Koreas Reach Deal to Connect Gaeseong Complex to Internet

South and North Korea have agreed on how to establish an internet network at their joint factory complex in the North.

The Unification Ministry said the two Koreas reached the deal during working-level talks on Friday.

They also agreed on details for verification, online services and communication privacy for the network at the Gaeseong Industrial Complex.

The two sides plan to begin building the network after South Korea’s KT and North Korea’s Korea Post and Telecommunications Company discuss a construction schedule and online service fees.

Since agreeing to resume operations at the industrial park, the two Koreas have addressed issues related to communication, cross-border passage and customs through subcommittees.

The industrial complex’s Internet network will originate from the KT’s Gaeseong office. It will then pass through the North’s communication ministry and Gaeseong telephone office before being linked to the Munsan telephone office in Paju in South Korea.

The government aims to provide Internet access at the industrial complex within the first half of the year.
