Speed Skater Lee Wins Gold Medal in Sochi

Speed skater Lee Sang-hwa won gold on Tuesday in the women’s 500 meter event at the Sochi Winter Olympics. It was South Korea’s first medal in the winter games.
 
Lee’s combined time was 74-point-70 seconds, beating Olga Fatkulina of Russia by zero-point-36 seconds.
 
In the two-race sprint event, Lee placed first in the first race with a score of 37-point-42 seconds. In the second race, she set a new Olympic record of 37-point-28 seconds.
 
Lee is the first Asian athlete to win gold at back-to-back Olympics in speed skating.  
 
Fellow speed skaters Lee Bo-ra came in 20th with 77-point-75 seconds while Kim Hyun-young ranked 24th and Park Seung-joo 26th.
 
In women’s curling, South Korea lost 8-6 to Switzerland during the second round robin session.
 
In women’s luge, Sung Eun-ryung ranked 29th out of 31 athletes in her fourth run in the women’s singles event with a score of three minutes and 28-point-743 seconds.
 
Norway currently ranks number one in the total medal tally with four gold medals. South Korea ranks tenth with one gold medal.
