Gov't Seeks Inclusion of Ancient Woodblocks on UNESCO World Memory

The government has decided it will seek to register wooden printing plates of Confucian scholars’ writings to the UNESCO Memory of the World.

The Korean Studies Advancement Center said a subcommittee of the Cultural Heritage Administration met Wednesday morning and made the decision to seek inclusion next year.

The administration plans to submit an official application around the end of next month to UNESCO’s Memory of the World Committee, which will decide on the designation around June next year.

A total of 64-thousand-226 woodblocks will be submitted for designation.

The woodblocks, which were donated by 305 clans, include literary compilations, history books, and biographies written by Confucian scholars from Gyeongsang Province from the late 15th century to the early 20th century.
