Korean musicians will perform the famous Korean folk song “Arirang” during the closing ceremony of the Sochi Winter Olympics.
Korean Japanese pianist and composer Kunihiko Ryo, also known as Yang Bang-ean, South Korean classical singer Jo Sumi, pop singer Lee Seung-chul and jazz singer Nah Youn-sun will perform a medley of various versions of "Arirang" with an orchestra at the closing ceremony on Sunday.
The performance will be held after the official Olympic flag is handed over to Pyeongchang, the next host of the winter Olympic games.
A local music industry figure said Tuesday that Ryo, who composed the 2002 Busan Asian Games' theme song "Frontier," arranged some of Korea's most popular provincial versions of "Arirang" into a classical medley for the performance. The person added the performance will promote the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
The organizing committee for the Pyeongchang games selected musicians and has been preparing the event since late last year.
