Celebration Mass Held for Newly Ordained Cardinals

A mass to celebrate the ordination of 19 cardinals was held at St. Peter’s Basilica on Sunday. South Korea's Andrew Yeom Soo-jung was one of the newly ordained.

In the mass, Pope Francis instructed the cardinals to avoid intrigue, gossip, cliques, favoritism and partiality.

The pontiff also told the cardinals to love and bless those who are hostile to them and speak ill of them. He called on the 19 cardinals to avoid arrogance, forget the humiliations they have endured and let the Holy Spirit lead them.

South Korean Cardinal Andrew Yeom Soo-jung said the pope told him he loves South Korea very much while they embraced during the ordination ceremony a day before. Yeom responded by saying that South Korean Catholic believers love the pope and he will work hard to help the pope as a cardinal.

The Seoul Diocese said Yeom had asked the pontiff to pray for families separated since the Korean War, noting the current inter-Korean family reunions at North Korea’s Mount Geumgang resort.
