No. of Coffee Shops in Seoul Increases 17% Annually

A new study indicates the popularity of coffee is on the rise in Seoul.

The Seoul Institute’s analysis of data from Statistics Korea shows the number of coffee shops jumped annually 16-point-seven percent from 2008 to 2011. During that time, the number of food and beverage shops in Seoul increased annually by one-point-69 percent on average.

The number of restaurants specializing in foreign food increased 15 percent a year, while other restaurants grew 14-point-three percent.

Catering services remained unchanged over the three years, while bars decreased every year.

As of 2011, there were nine-thousand-400 coffee shops in Seoul, with 12 percent of them located in the affluent Gangnam district in southern Seoul.

An official from the Seoul Institute said that the rapid rise of coffee shops and the decrease of bars in Seoul reflects changing consumption patterns of the citizens.
