Two More Paintings of Heavenly Horse Found in Silla Tomb

Two paintings of Cheonma, or the heavenly horse, have been discovered among relics excavated from a tomb of the ancient Silla Kingdom.

The Gyeongju National Museum said the horse paintings inscribed on wooden saddle flaps were found while relics from Cheonmachong, or the Heavenly Horse Tomb, were being treated for preservation.

The museum said one of the paintings is a landmark discovery, since it was made with thin gilt-bronze plate, which is a rare material for the horse painting.

The paintings are the second and third horse paintings found in Cheonmachong. The tomb is presumed to be the grave of the 22nd king of the Silla Dynasty. It was first excavated in 1973 and named after a famous white flying horse painting found inside. The painting was designated as National Treasure No. 207.
