Seoul Proposes Red Cross Talks with North on Reunions

South Korea has proposed holding a follow-up, working-level Red Cross meeting with North Korea next Wednesday to discuss inter-Korean family reunions.

The Unification Ministry says it proposed the two sides meet at the South Korean side of the truce village of Panmunjeom and discuss fundamental concerns of the reunions, including making them regular.

Seoul conveyed the proposal through a border village liaison channel on Wednesday morning, and North Korea officially accepted the message around 11:15 a.m.

Unification Ministry spokeswoman Park Soo-jin said the proposal is a follow-up to what President Park Geun-hye said in a speech on Saturday marking the March First Independence Movement Day.

In the speech, President Park proposed making cross-border family reunions a regular event. On Tuesday, she ordered officials to discuss with North Korea how separated families can correspond, including video reunions.
