Taekwondo Shortlisted for 2020 Paralympics Official Event

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has advanced taekwondo and badminton to phase two of the application process for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games.

The committee’s Governing Board reached the decision during a meeting in Sochi, Russia, on Thursday.

Other events did not make the cut, including electric wheelchair hockey, amputee football and 3-on-3 wheelchair basketball.

The IPC will deliberate from the end of this month to the end of July on whether or not to adopt taekwondo and badminton as official Paralympic sports. The committee will announce in October the official events of the 2020 Summer Paralympics.

Taekwondo had sought to become an official event at the 2016 Paralympics but efforts had failed.
