The Seoul city government has unveiled its 500 billion won (US$463 million) multipurpose cultural center in the Dongdaemun shopping district.

Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid, the spaceship-shaped Dongdaemun Design Plaza sits on a 86-thousand-square meter plot of land where Dongdaemun sports stadium used to be located.

The landmark building will be used for conventions, concerts and exhibitions. The center and its surrounding park will be open for 24 hours a day.

The opening of the plaza was marked by Seoul Fashion Week, which will feature some 60 shows by established designers.
