The South Korean military says that it is investigating the unmanned drone crash site on Baengyeong Island near the western sea border.
A government official in Seoul said Tuesday that the drone crashed on the island at around 4 p.m. and the military officials are probing the debris.
The drone's model is known to be two-meters long and equipped with a small digital camera.
The official said that the military and intelligence authorities are collaborating on the investigation, focusing on the possible involvement of North Korea in the crash.
The plane was reported to be similar to the one that was found crashed in Paju, Gyeonggi Province on March 24. The military is also looking into how the two drones might be related.
In August 2010, North Korea sent a drone near Baengyeong Island on a reconnaissance mission after firing some 100 artillery shells in the direction of the Northern Limit Line, the de facto western maritime border between the two Koreas.
