Korea’s Traditional Farming Systems Added to FAO's Heritage List

South Korea’s two traditional farming methods have been added to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization’s list of Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said the two additions are terraced rice paddies called “gudeuljang non” in Cheongsan Island, South Jeolla Province, and stone fences called “batdam” in Jeju Island.

The two traditional agricultural assets were recognized for their uniqueness, which is the result of residents’ age-long efforts to farm by overcoming unfavorable natural conditions in the regions.

The ministry will receive on Friday the letter of designation from the representative of the U.N. food agency in Daejeon.
