BBC Aims to Air Popular TV Programs in N. Korea

A leading British daily says North Korea is considering broadcasting popular BBC programs, including Teletubbies.

The Independent reported Britain’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office and BBC are trying to provide TV programs to the North to open the country’s eyes to the outside world.

The daily said the North responded positively about broadcasting three programs including the children’s series “Teletubbies,” science fiction program “ Doctor Who,” and “Top Gear,” a show about motor vehicles.

BBC launched the project last year and selected programs that would not be considered offensive in the communist country. Pyongyang is known to have held months of discussions before responding favorably to the three programs.
