The president of KBS has met with United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to discuss major broadcasting issues in the Asia Pacific region.
In the meeting held at the UN headquarters in New York on Wednesday, KBS President Gil Hwan-young called for the UN’s cooperation to ease burdens for underdeveloped countries in securing broadcasting rights for major sporting events.
The KBS chief also proposed that the public broadcaster and the UN would jointly produce documentaries on climate change, environment and humanity under the theme of sustainable development.
The UN secretary-general hoped that KBS would play a meaningful role in realizing its long-term visions at a time when the status of Asia Pacific countries is rising.
Ban said that he would seek cooperation from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to help developing countries secure sports coverage rights.
He added he would consider attending the general assembly of the Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union set for October in Macau.
Meanwhile, KBS and the UN have agreed to make plans to hold a concert with KBS orchestra at the UN next year to mark the 70th anniversary of Korea’s liberation and the foundation of the UN.
