UN to Host Asia Pacific Conference on Sustainable Tourism in Busan

A conference on on sustainable tourism in the Asia Pacific region will kick off in Busan on Thursday.

The two-day consultation will bring together about 100 government officials and tourism experts from the region. The conference is jointly organized by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the United Nations Office for Sustainable Development (UNOSD).

The participants will discuss ways to harmonize the tourism industry with local communities and local ecosystems to achieve sustainable development over a period of ten years.

An official from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said that the results of the conference will be reflected in the UNEP's Sustainable Tourism Program, which is part of the Ten-Year Framework of Programs (10YFP) on Sustainable Consumption and Production.

The official added that the Seoul government will expand cooperation with the ministries of environment, oceans and fisheries and local governments to promote sustainable tourism.
