South Korea’s Unification Ministry says that it sees no point in responding to an open questionnaire sent by North Korea, saying it is merely repetition of the North’s existing positions.
The North’s Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland sent on Wednesday a list of ten questions directed at President Park Geun-hye, claiming that inter-Korean relations completely depend on Park's attitude.
In the open questionnaire, the North criticized Seoul’s plan to create an international peace park in the demilitarized zone (DMZ), saying that it is more urgent to bring peace to the area surrounding five islands in the Yellow Sea near the inter-Korean sea border.
A South Korean unification ministry official on Thursday told reporters that there seems to be nothing new about the list, adding that the government will continue its preparations for the peace park project without being swayed by the North’s criticism.
The official also said that Seoul respects the 2007 Joint Statement in which the two Koreas agreed on the establishment of a peace zone in the Yellow Sea, but the two sides should hold discussions on the details to implement the agreement.
In addition, the official said that the South Korean government is preparing for all possible circumstances for reunification, in reference to Pyongyang's concerns that Seoul is seeking reunification by absorbing the North.
