Team Korea to Wear White Jerseys Twice in World Cup

Anchor: The 2014 FIFA World Cup is now less than two months away. The event kicks off on June 12 in Brazil. Korea will go head to head with Russia in its first match on June 17, followed by matches against Algeria and Belgium. FIFA has announced a decision on uniform colors for all teams in the group stages. Korea will wear white jerseys in two of those three games, and red in the other. Statistics show that in recent years, the national team has performed better in white.  Our Park Jong-hong explains.

Report: In the upcoming FIFA World Cup set to start in June in Brazil, Team Korea will wear white twice and red once in the first round.

FIFA announced that Korea will wear white uniforms in match-ups with Russia and Belgium, and red jerseys in the match with Algeria.

Though it may be coincidence, white has been a lucky color for the national soccer squad.

For instance, in the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup, Team Korea won three straight matches starting with its victory over Portugal at the end of the group stage. The team followed that with an inspiring upset over Italy in the round of sixteen, followed by another surprising win against Spain in the quarterfinals. For those three matches, Korea was wearing white.

In contrast, Korea's record in red that year included losses to Germany and Turkey in the semifinals and in the third place match, as well as a draw to the United States, with the Poland match being the only red victory.

On the other hand, blue shirts could represent bad luck. The team wore blue shirts in four separate World Cup matches since 1954, losing all of them, including a crushing five-nil defeat to the Netherlands at the 1998 World Cup in France. Following that loss, blue shirts were never worn again.

Although South Korea is expected to face tough challenges against Russia, Algeria and Belgium, all ranked higher in the official FIFA ranking, the team might be able to advance beyond the group stage.

U.S. broadcaster CBS said with the exception of Belgium, one of the dark horses in this year's World Cup, the other three teams in group H could all pull off some surprises.

Soccer fans are hoping that the white uniform will once again bring good luck for Team Korea.
