China Opens Volcanic Tour Site on Mt. Baekdu

A Chinese newspaper says a tour site on the Chinese border of Mount Baekdu is now open to the public.

Jilin Daily says the volcanic themed, 215-hectare large tour site that opened this month was created on a highland at one thousand meters above sea level.

The site is home to a basalt plain dubbed the "sea of stone" as well as a waterfall, pond, cave, valley and camp ground.

China increased monitoring Mount Baekdu’s volcanic and seismic activities by opening an earthquake bureau at the mountain's preservation and development committee last year.

According to Chinese data, lava erupted from Baekdu three times since the 16th century in the years 1597, 1688 and 1702.
