Prepackaged Samgyetang to be Exported to US

Samgyetang, a traditional Korean dish of boiled chicken and ginseng, will be legally allowed to be exported to the United States starting Sunday.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has added South Korea to the list of countries eligible to export poultry products to the U.S.

The move comes after the South Korean government asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture in April 2004 to allow Korean poultry products inside the U.S.

South Korea’s Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency and the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety carried out inspections last week on packhouses of four firms that produce prepackaged samgyetang, including Harim and Maniker.

The inspections were held to check if the establishments met the some 100 requirements requested by U.S. authorities.
