KBS Reporters Boycott News Production

Reporters at KBS are boycotting production, demanding KBS President Gil Hwan-young resign.

After refusing to produce news on Monday and Tuesday, the KBS reporters' association held an emergency meeting and decided to extend their boycott.

The association said it will keep a minimal team of reporters to cover news related to the Sewol ferry disaster. Most of KBS' news programs, however, will likely be shortened or canceled for the time being.

The current controversy comes amid public resentment over the government's handling of last month's deadly ferry accident and KBS' news coverage of the disaster.

The chief editor of KBS resigned, claiming the presidential office tried to wield influence over news broadcast through the KBS head for news favorable to the administration. Along with the chief editor, more than 240 KBS officials resigned from their posts.

The replacement for the chief editor also had to leave the post shortly amid suspicions that the top office could have influenced his appointment.

KBS' two labor unions have begun holding a vote on whether to launch a general strike demanding its president's resignation.

In a vote of confidence on the president held last week by the KBS chapter of the National Union of Mediaworkers, 97-point-nine percent of the union members voted against Gil.

KBS management says the all-out strike sought by the two labor unions is illegal and that it will strictly hold them accountable based on law and company regulations.

In a statement to his fellow KBS staff on Wednesday, President Gil refused to step down in the face of what he called a politically motivated instigation and denied allegations brought on by the former chief editor.
