The South Korean government has rejected North Korea’s proposal to restart a bilateral event marking the anniversary of the signing of the inter-Korean June 15th declaration in the North Korean city of Gaeseong.

Unification Ministry spokeswoman Park Soo-jin said in a news briefing Wednesday that it is inappropriate for the two Koreas to hold such a joint event, given the current icy inter-Korean relations. She added it is also difficult for Seoul to agree to bilateral working-level talks that would discuss the event.

On Wednesday morning, the North Korean Committee for Implementing the June 15 Joint Declaration proposed holding the joint event to commemorate the declaration and also mourn the victims of the ferry disaster.

This year would mark the 14th anniversary of the declaration, but the event has been suspended since 2010, when Seoul imposed economic sanctions on Pyongyang following the North’s torpedoing of the South Korean naval vessel Cheonan.
