Police said Tuesday that local police have taken seven people into custody in connection with the subway fire that killed at least 198 people last month in Daegu. Those arrested include Kim Dae-han, 56, who is thought to have started the fire, the 38-year-old driver of one of the trains engulfed in the inferno, and five subway officials. The Daegu Metropolitan Police Agency said it has also requested a detention warrant for the driver of a second train involved in the incident and filed charges against three other subway officials. Police said senior company officials erased sections of transcripts and audiotapes containing messages exchanged between drivers of the trains and subway traffic controllers submitted to the police. Police also said Choi, the driver of a second train, arrived at Jungangno Station despite having been informed that a fire had broken out there and neglected to take procedures that would have allowed his passengers to escape. The driver of the train where the fire broke out is suspected of failing to report the emergency immediately to the traffic controllers while police said the chief of the control team, identified as Gwak, and three officials at Jungangno Station neglected their duties. In addition to the 198 killed, 145 people were injured and hundreds are listed as missing. Property damage from the fire was estimated at $23 million dollars.
