BOK Governor Stresses Role of Finance During Unification Process

Bank of Korea Governor Lee Ju-yeol said the economic outcome of unification will depend on the speed of integration between the South and North Korean currencies and the currency exchange ratio.

In a welcoming address at the Seoul Asian Financial Forum Monday, Lee said finance will be so important during the reunification process that it could affect the outcome of reunification itself.

Lee said in theory, the currency exchange ratio should be decided by purchasing power, but non-economic factors must also be considered. He said if the ratio is solely decided by economic logic, it could hurt sociopolitical stability. He said, however, if sociopolitical factors become too large, economic costs will increase.

Lee said South Korea must establish many unification scenarios and closely analyze the role of finance required in each scenario.
