Controversy over the Swiss Army has emerged after a video disclosed two North Korean army officers handling guns on a trip to Switzerland.
Local media quoted the tabloid Blick as saying that since 2011, eight North Koreans have studied at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP), with the Swiss Defense Ministry covering the costs.
In response to the criticism of wasting taxpayers’ money, the ministry said it wanted to help closed countries like the North to understand and open up to the rest of the world.
However, last Thursday, a Blick reporter hid in a bush at a shooting range in Geneva and filmed GCSP students, including two North Korean trainees, walking through the woods with Swiss rifles. One female student accidently shot off her gun.
The media quoted Regula Rytz, president of the Green Party, as describing the latest incident as an “embarrassing scandal.” She added that the Swiss army and the GCSP appeared to be North Korea’s accomplices.
She said that if the defense ministry did not look into the incident, a government investigating committee would be established.
