Wages of N. Korean Workers at Gaeseong Industrial Park Up 5%

Wages for North Korean workers at the Gaeseong industrial complex will increase by five percent.

South Korea's Gaeseong Industrial District Management Committee and the North's Central Special Zone Development Guidance General Bureau agreed to raise wages by 70 dollars and 35 cents a month.

During a regular briefing Monday, unification ministry spokesman Kim Eui-do said the annual wage hike usually occurs in August, but was pushed forward by three months this year at the suggestion of companies in the industrial park.

He added that the minimum wage stayed flat last year due to a temporary closure at the industrial complex.

Fifty-two-thousand North Koreans work at the inter-Korean industrial complex in the North Korean city. Their average wage ranges from 135 to 150 dollars a month, including social insurance and overtime pay for holiday and night shifts.
