North Korea plans to expand cooperation in railway tourism with China and Russia.
The North Korean web portal “Naenara” said Thursday that a joint venture established between the North and a Hong Kong-based company in April 2012, is operating passenger trains on three lines linking Pyongyang to Dandong, Beijing and Shenyang.
The portal said that all the trains operated by the joint venture are designed and produced in accordance with standards of the Organization for Cooperation of Railways, and experienced engineers and experts are ensuring safety and convenience for passengers.
The portal added that the joint venture is preparing to launch new routes in the near future, connecting downtown Pyongyang with the Russian cities of Vladivostok, Khabarovsk and Moscow.
The move comes as Pyongyang is seeking to attract foreign tourists to secure foreign currency, while Beijing moves to stimulate the local economy and Moscow seeks to expand exchanges with North Korea.
