Korean Embassy in Russia Issues Warning Ahead of Korea-Russia Match

Korean residents in Russia have been urged to take extra caution for Wednesday’s World Cup game between South Korea and Russia.

The Korean Embassy in Russia issued a letter to Korean residents and advised them against watching the game in large gatherings or cheering for the Korean team on the streets. It also urged the residents to avoid getting involved in physical brawls with extreme Russian football fans.

In the letter, Lee Jin-hyun, Korea’s consulate general in Russia, gave examples of some Japanese who were beaten by Russian football fans in Moscow after Japan won against Russia during the 2002 World Cup.

The Korea-Russia match will air Wednesday morning in Moscow. The early match is expected to ease safety concerns as many people are not likely to go out to support their teams.
