About 100-thousand football fans are expected to pour into major public places around the nation Wednesday morning, to cheer for the South Korean national team’s opener against Russia in the FIFA World Cup.
The National Police Agency said Tuesday it expects about 100-thousand people to flock to about 20 outdoor venues nationwide, including 50-thousand people in Seoul.
In the capital city, about 30-thousand people are forecast to gather at Yeongdong Street around the COEX exhibition center in southern Seoul with an additional 20-thousand gathering at Gwanghwamun Square in downtown Seoul.
Accordingly, traffic will be controlled around Yeongdong Street from 10 p.m. Tuesday to 2 p.m. Wednesday, with traffic in all seven lanes from Samseong subway station in the direction of the COEX convention center restricted.
However, traffic will be allowed to pass along the seven lanes in the opposite direction.
Police will also control traffic at Gwanghwamun Square in phases from midnight Tuesday according to the number of people who show up to cheer.
