"N. Korea Should Learn from Kazakh Nuke Abandonment"

Visiting Kazakhstan on the second leg of her Central Asia tour, President Park Geun-hye has called on North Korea to make the right kind of change and become a responsible member of the international community.

Park made the call in an interview with Kazakhstan's Khabar TV aired Wednesday, urging the North to observe how the Central Asian country abandoned its nuclear ambitions and has come to enjoy economic growth.

The president noted that Kazakhstan voluntarily gave up some one-thousand nuclear warheads and in return was given massive economic assistance by the U.S., Russia and Britain.

Park said that while North Korea’s refusal to abandon its nuclear ambitions has been an obstacle in improving inter-Korean relations, the precedent set by Kazakhstan serves as a big lesson.
