The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said one South Korean soldier participating in U.N peacekeeping operations died and four others are missing after an accident Thursday afternoon. The ill-fated servicemen were crossing a river aboard jeeps in Oecussi, about 200 kilometers from Timor's capital city of Dili. The accident took place when they were on their way to meet a Korean contingency team who had reported their power generator was out of order. A JCS official said the Oecussi area is currently having its rainy season in which up to 400 mm of rainfall pours an hour and our soldiers are believed to have been swept away by rapid currents while crossing the river. The official said South Korea's "Sangnoksu" or Evergreen unit is searching for the missing men in cooperation with the U.N. peacekeeping forces command there. Presently 432 South Korean troops are in Oecussi as U.N. peacekeepers.
