Gov't to Allow Inter-Korean Buddhist Memorial Event

Seoul's Unification Ministry has decided to allow a joint event for Buddhist circles in South and North Korea.

In a briefing Friday, ministry spokesman Kim Eui-do said it is the Unification Ministry's stance to allow inter-Korean exchanges in non-political areas, such as religion and culture.

South Korea's Jogye Buddhist Order and North Korea's Chosun Buddhist Federation agreed to hold a joint memorial in North Korea to mark 70 years since the death of Han Yong-un, a Buddhist monk and independence activist. The event is scheduled for June 29 at Singye Temple in the North's Mount Geumgang.

Pyongyang is known to have sent a formal invitation to the South's Jogye order.

Singye temple is also the venue for an annual joint inter-Korean Buddhist service that prays for the unification of the two Koreas.
