Balloons Carrying Choco Pies Sent to N. Korea by Local Groups

A group of eight South Korean organizations sent to North Korea on Saturday large balloons carrying South Korea’s chocolate-coated snack, Choco Pies.

Some 200 members of the eight conservative organizations sent 60 balloons carrying 300 kilograms of South Korean snacks, including Choco Pies, via a parking lot in the Imjingak Pavilion in Paju from eleven a.m. Saturday.

The balloons were sent in a bid to protect the human rights of the North Korean people who are suffering from food shortage. The balloons did not carry leaflets denouncing the North Korean government.

Kim Yong-hwa, the leader of one of the organizations, the North Korea Refugees Human Rights Association of Korea, said the Choco Pies are meant to give hope to the starving North Korean people. Kim said the organizations will regularly send Choco Pies to the North until the day the two Koreas are reunified.
