Korea lost to Algeria 4-2 in their second Group H match Monday morning Korea time, dashing a chance to secure its second consecutive berth to the knockout stage.
At Beira-Rio stadium in Porto Alegre, Team Korea snuffed out an early Algerian threat but never found any momentum before it surrendering three goals in the space of 12 minutes in the first half.
Islam Slimani, Rafik Halliche, and Abdelmoume Djabou scored for Algeria in the first half. Slimani beat Korean defense on a fast counterattack in the 26th minute thanks to a through pass from Carl Medjani .
In the 28th, Halliche scored on a Djabou corner kick as goalie Jung Sung-ryong was awkward in his attempt to parry it. Djabou extended the lead to a 3-0 in the 38th minute on a Slimani pass.
Son Heung-min opened the scoring for Korea in the 50th minute. Yacine Brahimi extended the lead again to three in the 62nd minute but Koo Ja-cheol responded with a 72nd goal.
Korea’s first shot on target of the match in the 50th minute was converted into its first goal when Son of Bayer Leverkusen trapped a long pass from Yun Suk-young on his back and sent a right-footer that slipped through on-rushing Algeria goalie Rais Mbolhi.
Mbolhi managed to deflect a canon shot by Ki Sung-yueng from outside the box in the 59th minute and three minutes later, Brahimi scored Algeria’s fourth goal, finishing off a clever pass from Sofiane Feghouli.
Korea captain Koo narrowed the gap to two goals in the 72nd minute when he tapped in a Lee Keun-ho pass in front of goal.
The loss puts Korea at the bottom of Group H. Belgium, the top ranked team in the group, reached the knockout stage first with a 1-0 victory over Russia on Divock Origi's 88th-minute goal earlier the day. The victory leaves Belgium with six points atop the group. Algeria is in second with three points while both Russia and Korea have one point but Russia is ahead in goal differential.
Korea is still alive, but the prospect of reaching the next round is bleak. In one possible scenario, Korea would need Russia to defeat Algeria by only one goal, while defeating Belgium by two. Both matches will be played simultaneously on Friday at 5am Korea time.
