North Korea will reportedly send a cheering squad to the Incheon Asian Games set for September.
A North Korean source said Tuesday that authorities have decided to send a squad of about 100 to Incheon, and those who were selected for the squad early this month have started closed training.
The source said that the squad is mainly comprised of female students from Kim Il-sung University with height of at least 160 centimeters, with a few male students and professional performers as well.
It would be the fourth time that the North sent a cheering squad to a sporting event in South Korea. Pyongyang sent a cheering squad to the 2003 Busan Asian Games, 2003 Daegu Universiad and the 2005 Incheon Asian Athletics Championships.
A South Korean official hinted that the government would accept the squad’s visit, but it is uncertain that the visit will be realized due to joint military exercises between the South and the U.S. set for August.
