N. Korea Replaces Armed Forces Minister

North Korea’s former Chief of the General Staff of the Korean People’s Army Hyon Yong-chol was found to have become the North’s new Minister of People’s Armed Forces.

The North’s Korea Central Broadcasting Station introduced Hyon as the new minister in its report on Tuesday about a gathering in Pyongyang. The post was previously held by Jang Jong-nam.

Jang appears to have been replaced this month as he was referred as the Minister of People’s Armed Forces on June 4 in a local news report.

Jang assumed the minister post May of last year, which is equivalent to the post of defense minister in South Korea.

Born in 1949, Hyon was appointed the Chief of the General Staff of the Korean People’s Army in July 2012. He was replaced by Kim Kyok-sik in May of last year.
