Korea’s final Group H match at Brazil World Cup with Belgium was 0-0 half way through at Arena Corinthians in Sao Paulo.
Belgium would enter the second half with one man down after Steven Defour was red carded in the 45th minute after fouling on Kim Shin-wook.
Dries Mertens had a one-and-one chance with goalie Kim Seung-gyu in the 24th minute after a shot by Kevin Mirallas was deflected off defender Kim Young-gwon, but Merten’s effort went off target, with the ball floating over the bar.
Ki Sung-yueng generated Korea’s first shot on target with a mid-range attempt in the 29th but was not strong enough to beat goalie Thibaut Courtois.
Korea entered the match as last-place in Group H on a point, desperate for three points over the group leader that still can’t secure it a place in the last 16. Not only did it have to hope Russia beats or draws with Algeria in a match that started simultaneously, but it also had to defeat Belgium by at least two or three goals to take a shot at the second round.
The Russia-Algeria match in Curitiba entered the half-time break with Russia leading Algeria 1-0 on Aleksandr Kokorin’s 6th-minute goal.
Algeria is on three points earned from a 4-2 victory over Korea, while Russia is tied with Korea on a point but ahead by a goal difference.
Having already qualified for the knockout stage with two victories, Belgium benched some of its key players against Korea, including Vincent Kompany, and Thomas Vermaelen.
Kim Shin-wook, a 1.96-meter-tall forward, started as a sole striker for Korea in the place of Park Chu-young, while Kim Seung-gyu replaced Jung Sung-ryong in front of the net.
