N. Korea Again Test-Fires Missiles into East Sea

North Korea has again test-fired two short-range projectiles toward the East Sea early Sunday.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said the North fired one projectile from the northern parts of its border city of Gaeseong at 1:20 a.m. and another at 1:30 a.m. into the East Sea.

The JCS said the projectiles are presumed to be Scud-C missiles which have a range of around 500 kilometers.

In particular, the JCS said North Korea launched the missiles just 20 kilometers north of the military demarcation line, adding that the North is likely to have transported a launching pad 50 to 60 kilometers from its missile base in Hwanghae Province for Sunday’s launch.

The JCS said with the latest launch, the North could be intending to show its precision capacity as well as that it is capable of firing missiles at any time and from anywhere. The JCS added that Sunday’s launch could also be in protest of Friday’s entry of the United States nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, the USS George Washington, into Busan.

Sunday marks the 14th time the North has fired some 97 short to mid-range projectiles this year. Among the projectiles, 12 have been ballistic missiles.

Military authorities said the North fired the projectiles without informing civilian flights or vessels of their planned action.
