N. Korea Strengthens Sanctions on Entry Violations at Gaeseong Complex

North Korea has notified Seoul that it will strengthen sanctions on entry violations by South Koreans at the Gaeseong Industrial Complex.

The Ministry of Unification said Friday that the North had said earlier on Tuesday that it will start imposing a one-day entry ban on South Koreans caught carrying forbidden items into the inter-Korean complex. Such banned items include documents criticizing the North and automobile black boxes.

The North said it will also deny entries by South Korean vehicles for one or two days if drivers are caught failing to cover up their license numbers or exceed the allowed entry time.

North Korea said if the violation is deemed serious enough, it could even impose sanctions on the South Korean companies based in the complex that are involved in the violation.

Until now, the North has usually imposed fines for South Koreans who violated entry rules in the complex. A fine of one-hundred dollars was given for bringing in a mobile phone and a 50 dollar fine was issued for failing to adhere to entry hours.
