The two Koreas will resume a joint project to excavate an ancient royal palace in Gaesong, North Korea.

The inter-Korean project to excavate the site of Manwoldae, a palace in the Goryeo Dynasty, was halted in December 2011 after North Korean leader Kim Jong-il died.

A total of 45 South Korean historians are slated to visit Gaesong for the project, with the first 13 people set to arrive on Tuesday.

Among the historians, 15 experts from the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage will stay in the Gaesong Industrial Complex and work on the project.

They plan to excavate and study part of a building in the Manwoldae site until August 16.
