The Voice of America (VOA) says a nongovernmental group in the U.S. will send to North Korea heavy equipment for drilling water wells for hospitals, schools and orphanages.

VOA quoted James Linton, the head of Well Spring, as saying on Wednesday that his group will send the well-drilling equipment to the North via China next week. The group recently got permission to send the heavy machinery from the U.S. Department of Commerce.

The group plans to send a drilling machine and a truck that can carry one tons of equipment. With one drilling machine, 35 to 40 wells can be dug in one year.

Well Spring has been involved in well-drilling projects in the North since 2006.
