Hanjin Group Chairman Cho Yang-ho has been chosen as the new head of the organizing committee for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
The organizing committee nominated Cho as its new head during a general meeting in Seoul on Thursday. He must now receive final approval from the culture and sports minister.
If Cho is approved, he will serve as the organizing committee’s head until October 18 of next year, or the remainder of the term of Kim Jin-sun who resigned from the position as chief of the organizing committee on July 21.
After Thursday’s general meeting, Cho said he will do his best for the successful hosting of the Pyeongchang Olympics based on his experience as head of the bidding committee for the winter games.
Cho served as the head of the bidding committee for the Pyeongchang Olympics from September 2009, playing a significant role in bringing the games to South Korea. He currently holds the title of vice president of the Korean Olympic Committee.
