3 Foreign Candidates Shortlisted for New Korean Football Coach

The Korea Football Association (KFA) has narrowed the list of candidates to take over the men's national football team to three.

After a two-day meeting with KFA technical committee members, Lee Yong-soo, head of the committee, said Thursday that the association has decided to first negotiate with the candidates before making the decision.

All three potential coaches are foreign nationals, and Lee said they have experience in leading a team to the round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup. He added they also have successful coaching careers with professional clubs.

When asked why a South Korean candidate was not on the list, he said while South Korean coaches are also capable, the association felt the need for a change.

Lee was responsible for bringing in Dutch coach Guus Hiddink, who led the national team to the semifinals in the 2002 World Cup co-hosted by Korea and Japan.

The committee did not disclose the names of the coaches, saying they will contact them soon and start negotiations.
