The Voice of America says Australia has advised its citizens to reconsider travel to North Korea.
According to the VOA on Friday, Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade reissued its travel alert on the North with editorial amendments.
The department said in the North, restrictions are placed on foreigners with very different laws and regulations applying to behavior. It said foreigners can be arrested, detained or expelled for activities that would not be considered crimes in Australia, including unsanctioned religious and political activities and unauthorized travel.
The department also urged its citizens that if traveling to the North, they should not bring anything into the country that could be perceived by local officials as religious, pornographic or political in nature.
The department advised travelers to the North to organize comprehensive travel insurance and register their trip and contact details with the department.
The travel alert was issued after the North arrested 75-year-old Australian John Short in February for allegedly distributing religious material. He was released 15 days later in March.
