A senior lawmaker of the main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy (NPAD) will deliver the opposition’s policies on North Korea and unification.
Woo Yoon-keun, NPAD’s policy planning committee chief, will convey the policies on Thursday at the first meeting of a unification preparatory committee under the direct control of President Park Geun-hye.
Ahead of attending the meeting, Woo told Seoul-based Yonhap News that he plans to call for active efforts to organize a reunion for separated families before the Chuseok holidays that will begin early next month. He added that most separated family members are now getting older.
Woo added that his party believes it’s important to restore inter-Korean dialogue between government officials by lifting the so-called May 24 sanctions. The South imposed the sanctions on North Korea in the wake of the North’s 2010 sinking of the South's Cheonan naval vessel.
Woo stressed dialogue between government officials would provide a significant breakthrough in inter-Korean exchanges, which are currently at a stalemate.
On July 10, President Park proposed that the policy planning committee chiefs of the ruling and opposition parties join the unification preparatory committee. The NPAD also decided to have Woo take part in the committee to cooperate on unification issues.
