"Bert van Marwijk Korea's 1st Pick for National Football Team"

The Korea Football Association revealed Thursday that it has offered the position of manager for the Korean national football team to Bert van Marwijk.

Lee Yong-soo, head of the KFA’s Technical Committee, called a media conference at KFA’s headquarters in Jongno, central Seoul, saying that Marwijk also expressed interest in coaching Team Korea.

Lee said that he met Marwijk in Amsterdam on Tuesday, and was accompanied by Kim Dong-dae, a vice chairman of the KFA, and Jun Han-jin, a manager of KFA’s international division.

On July 31, the KFA said it shortlisted its candidates to three foreign coaches, but did not give any names.

Marwijk was rumored to be among the three, but Thursday's announcement is the first time the KFA confirmed he was the lead candidate it was considering.

The 62-year-old Dutch made his name as a coach after he led the Orange Team to be the runners-up during the South Africa FIFA World Cup in 2010. He resigned as coach in 2012 after the Dutch team lost all three games in its group competition during the 2012 UEFA Euro Championships.

Lee said that he will give Marwijk a week to decide on accepting the KFA’s offer.

If he declines the position, Lee said the KFA will immediately contact the next candidates on its list.
