The South Korean movie “Roaring Currents” has taken off at a furious pace, reaching nine-million moviegoers in the nation at the fastest rate on record, just eleven days after opening in theaters.
Distributor CJ Entertainment said the number of viewers had reached over nine-million early on Saturday, surpassing records set by “The Host” in 2006 and “The Thieves” in 2012.
“Roaring Currents” has been breaking records at a swift pace, reaching two-million moviegoers in just three days, five-million in six days and seven-million in eight days.
With its continued popularity, the movie is expected to reach ten-million viewers by August 10 in its second week at the theaters.
The period action flick features the victory of Joseon Admiral Yi Sun-shin’s remarkable naval victory in 1597 over Japanese invaders in the sea of Myeongnyang. The legendary admiral defeated a Japanese fleet of 330 vessels with only 12 ships at his command.
