Unification Minister Ryoo Kihl-jae says South Korea wants to explain in detail President Park Geun-hye’s Dresden Initiative to North Korea if it accepts the South's invitation for talks.
After the ministry announced Monday a proposal for inter-Korean talks next week, the minister told reporters that the South wants to discuss various pending issues between the two Koreas.
He said a potential agenda item could include the issue of holding reunions for families separated since the Korean War.
Ryoo said that if Pyongyang accepts the proposal, September would be a month of important inter-Korean events, including the North's participation in the Incheon Asian Games.
He said the government plans to actively pursue the “Korean Peninsula trust-building process” to ensure the two Koreas will find a breakthrough in improving their strained relations.
The minister added that despite the North’s nuclear issues and strained inter-Korean relations, the Seoul government plans to actively push for the plans under the Dresden Initiative without hampering international cooperation on sanctions against the North.
