A group of ethnic Korean Russians held a ceremony before starting on the Korean leg of their cross-continental automobile rally starting in Russia and ending in Korea.
North Korea's official Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that the ceremony was held on top of North Korea's Mount Baekdu on Sunday to mark the rally in support of peace on the Korean Peninsula and unification of the two Koreas.
The team began the Russia-Korea 2014 International Rally on July 7 in Moscow, along a route passing through Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Siberia and the Russian Far East. The rally was organized to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first known Korean migration to Russia.
The 29-member team crossed the Russian border with North Korea and arrived at the Tumen River in the North on Friday.
They will arrive in Pyongyang on Thursday via Najin, Wonsan and Mount Geumgang. The rally will then cross the Military Demarcation Line to arrive in Seoul at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Three of them will attend a papal mass at Myeongdong Cathedral in central Seoul on August 18. The rally's final destination is Mt. Halla on Jeju-island.
