38 North: No Activity Detected at N. Korea's Punggyeri Nuke Test Site

A North Korea analysis Web site says there is virtually no activity at the Punggye-ri Nuclear Test Site where signs were detected in late April that the North was on the verge of carrying out another nuclear test.

The Web site 38 North, a program of the U.S.-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins University, made the assessment on Monday based on recent commercial satellite imagery.

The report said the latest images show there is no activity at either area where the North could conduct its next blast, or at the facility that would be the support area for the test.

It added that the reason for the discontinued act is unclear, but one possibility could be that the initial preparations for conducting a fourth nuclear test have been completed.

It said based on past limited experience, the North could take about six to eight weeks to conduct a detonation, adding that the activity would likely be observable.
