An opposition lawmaker is soon expected to visit North Korea to receive a commemorative wreath from the North on the fifth anniversary of the death of former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung.
Rep. Park Jie-won of the main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy revealed the plan on Friday.
North Korea notified the South on Thursday of its plans to hand over the wreath in its border city of Gaeseong on Monday, the anniversary day of the late president.
The Seoul government said that if a request for a cross-border visit is made, it will positively review allowing it.
Rep. Park, a former aide to late President Kim, did not elaborate on which North Korean official will present the wreath, but the North's director of the United Front Department Kim Yang-gon is speculated as a likely candidate.
Given Kim's memorial event is scheduled for Monday, lawmaker Park plans to visit the North on Sunday.
Three to four officials, including some from the Kim Dae-jung Peace Center, will accompany Park. Former First Lady Lee Hee-ho is not believed to be among the group.
In the past, Rep. Park has held various roles in inter-Korean events, including serving as a special envoy to the June 2000 South-North summit.
Park last visited the North to the Mount Geumgang resort in August 2007 with former First Lady Lee Hee-ho.
